In 1956, Thunderbird began building cathedral-hull boats in Hialeah, Florida. The famous powerboat racer Don Aronow founded Formula in 1962 in Miami, Florida. The original 233 deep-V hull design was built at his direction and later earned notable victories on the national offshore racing circuit. Formula was the first of Aronow’s boat companies. While many of today's Formulas have matured well beyond the speed-only image, the prestige originating with past racing victories is still quite evident in the highly successful FAS3TECH series. During the mid '60s, Thunderbird purchased Formula and produced both lines in North Miami, Florida. Meanwhile, in Decatur, Indiana, Victor Porter began producing fiberglass boats in 1958 as Duo, Inc., and in 1970 he developed another line, Signa. As Signa became successful, Fuqua Industries, the company that had acquired Thunderbird Formula, purchased the line in 1974. Vic Porter was named president of Fuqua's group of pleasure boat companies, and when the opportunity arose in 1976, Vic purchased Thunderbird Formula. Over the past thirty years, the Porter family has been actively involved in Formula's daily operations. The Porter family philosophy of continual improvement and customer-oriented service ensures that Formula will lead into the future as the hallmark of powerboat excellence. Thunderbird Formula is a charter member of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, for Formula has always been committed to product integrity. NMMA certification to ABYC standards is displayed in each Formula, and should be a determining factor when considering other boats. Meanwhile the Formula legacy includes the following product lines, namely the FAS3TECH performance powerboats, trendsetting Super Sports, Sun Sports & Bowriders, and also the luxurious Performance Cruiser and Yacht models.
